On Following Your Own Way

Man you guys I am super sorry I dropped the ball on reading through all this shit.  I FEEL LIKE I MISSED SO MUCH WILL I EVER GAIN YOUR FORGIVENESS?  I'm slowly working my way back through time, reading all of your posts and comments... I'll finish some day!

Anyway, I got really excited reading Missy's event list.  I feel the same way... counting down the days until what?  For me, I've got the weekend.  Every week I count down until the weekend.  But what if we had more things to count down to?  I think it'd be great if we counted down to, well... each other.

So I'd like to make a calendar of 2014 events!  The Summer Celebration is already undergoing planning, and hopefully that date works out well for everyone.  Let's add some more stuff to that list!

-June 20/21st: Idk I just really want some sushi man.  Also it's my last weekend before Brendan comes!  Anybody been wanting to do anything special?  Movie Marathon?  Beach Day?  We'll go do that!
-July 4th: Independence day! I'm not quite sure if I'll be in town (I was considering visiting my brother), but we should plan a gathering that day too (unless you typically spend it with your families?)
-August 9th: Summer Celebration!
-October 31st: Have we ever had a group Halloween party where we watch Hocus Pocus and eat entirely too much candy?!
-November 29th or December 5th: Second Thanksgiving!!
December 31st: Drunken New Year's!  What should this year's theme be?!

An event each month should work out I hope!

In other news: The other day I was watching some ridiculous post-apocalyptic movie (oh, it was the new Godzilla!), and I had a crisis about my complete lack of useful skills in the event of a disaster...  I just want to be a useful person who contributes something to the world!  I'm thinking I'll leave my current job in September or December, and maybe go back to school part time or something at COD or Harper.  I hear Harper actually has a good 2-year engineering program that, if you make the grade, will transition into an actual degree from U of I!   Maybe I'll just go build robots, guys.  Or maybe I'll just bake.  Or maybe I'll build robots that bake.

Anyway.... I've also been reading this web comic, hopefully you guys have heard of it: Ava's Demon
It's by some like... Pixar artist or something, and I really like the art and how it's presented... I think it's how the medium of webcomics should be used.  It's really slow to update sometimes so it's also pretty easy to catch up with!

How is it nearly May Already?

I have a dry erase calender that I keep on hand in my bedroom. Every month I write out the days, filling in my work schedule, and every day I cross off a square. Counting down the days to...nothing, really. It's a disconcerting thing, watching time slip away like that.

I feel like I'm at a crossroads of sorts, and I'm not sure which road to take. Keep pushing for an office job? Stick with what I have and try to advance? Work on getting something that's more in line with what I actually went to school for? ...Go back to school?

I don't know.

I do know that I'm not quite who I used to be. I'm not entirely certain what that means, or the exact ways in which I am different. But here I am, listening to weird ass indie folk music--music I adamantly refused to listen to back in the day. It was rock or alternative or techno and nothing else, for so many years. Not anymore. I feel this is mostly your guys' fault, and I thank you for it.

I do know that I have a story I want to write, and maybe this time I'll write it.

I do know that I say shit like that a lot and often have very little to show for it.

I do know that I'll probably keep doing it, too, until the day maybe comes when I finally do have something to show for it.

I guess we'll find out.

Things to do Before 30

Been having one of those days where I think about how old I am. 23 isn't exactly ancient, sure, but still...where the hell has the time gone? 23 years old is two years away from being 25, and that's FIVE YEARS FROM BEING 30. And just...I want to do things. Things that should be accomplished in my twenties. I'm sure when I hit 30 I'll have a list of things I'll want to do within that decade as well, but for now the time is ticking for my 20s.

I guess I should specify--this is not stuff like...Get a college degree, get a job. These are things that exist outside of the daily humdrum of life. I don't want to look back at my twenties and only see "oh, I did a lot of school work" or "oh, I got a part time job and paid some bills."

Here's a list of shit I'd like to see in addition to that, shit that I'd like to do with all of you lovely people:

  1. Write and produce a radio play
  2. Make a poorly filmed horror short. And I mean really poorly filmed--crashing through the trees in our sneakers, shaky cameras, flailing in the night kind of shit.
  3. Writer's Retreat//Road Trip, though they can be separate things
  4. 48 hour gaming session. I did it when I was ten, I should be able to do it in my 20s.
  5. Learn a random a skill or craft

I'm sure there's more, but I have a nasty habit of going too big with my ideas, so I'm keeping it at five. I am dead serious about all of these things, so if any of them interest you, let me know!

<3

Quick Update

It's been a while since I posted here, but here goes:

  • Finally got a job (part time, sure, but still! money!)
  • Nanowrimo starts in like half an hour

...and everything else is more or less personal, so I won't bore you with that.

Have some music (and maybe send some my way, eh?)

I like her voice.

Employed and ready to ride, suckaaaaas

So as you all know, I've been livin like a fat cat in the city since April. It's been great. I've been unemployed and living off of my savings, doing the occasional odd massage/dogsitting job, and my federal tax return. I've pretty much just been paying my own bills+groceries. Mike's been handling... p.much every thing else. WHICH IS GREAT and he never minded because he'd have been spending as much anyway. Probably more because he doesn't cook.

ANYWAY. The joyful days of lazing in the sun with my dog had to come to an end. Thanks to My Good Friend Rachelle, I had a bomb-ass resume with which to sprinkle across the internet because fuck it I aint goin to all yall stores. LONG STORY SHORT I got one of the gigs. I am going to be working the same schedule all week erryweek so I am giving it to you guys so that chu know.

Mon- OFF
Tues- OFF
Wed- 3:30-9:30
Thurs- 3:30-9:30
Fri- 3:30-9:30
Sat- OFF
Sun- 2-8

IT IS SUPER EASY FOR ME TO GET DAYS OFF IF I HAVE ADVANCE NOTICE. Include me in everything forever sob.
Also if you wanna do something let me know because seriously, I drive to the suburbs all the time. Don't think that because I live a half hour away, I aint gonna drive down to see you. 8C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you should totes come and sleep over too because I am a great hostess.

I'm really excited for this job and my coworkers are super cute and chill. I have guaranteed hours, with guaranteed pay. This is a much healthier environment than my last job.

MUSIC TIME:
I saw Ripley Caine and the Full Moon at a street fest this week and they were delightful, my goodness.

Beware of Aggressive Geese

Go to the graduation fair, they said. Go to the graduation fair where the only people who want to be there less than you are the people running it.

No but seriously.

I picked up my cap and gown and crap today, so I guess this ceremony thing is going to happen whether I like it or not. I still have mixed feelings--I didn't care much about the ceremony in high school, and I know college is a bigger deal and all that jazz but...Meh. It's probably going to be hot and awful and I swear if it goes over 2 hours I'm gonna be p i s s e d.

The sentiment is surprisingly more common than I thought, so I guess there's that. Solidarity and all that.

Other than the whole finishing undergrad at last business, I haven't been up to much. The weather is getting nicer, my health issues for the past six months seem to have finally worked themselves out, and who knows maybe I'll start working on the whole losing weight thing while trying to find some form of employment. At this point I'd be pretty solid with A Job, if not The Job, because I don't think I'm old enough or have been exposed enough to even know what The Job would ideally be. Maybe it's stupid on my part, but if I manage to get A Job that allows me to work in some form or other in my field (whether directly through A Job or through internships and programs and whatever) then I think that might actually be okay, you know, for now. Maybe even preferable. I just graduated college for goodness sake; why rush to get tied up in something else? Bills. Loans. So long as those get paid...Do what you want, right? ...Right?

Oh man, I'm not cut out for this adult shit, have some music:

I don't know who these people are but they popped up on Pandora like a million times last week and I guess I kind of like them so far.

Also there are angry nesting geese all over campus and it's like an invasion and they're pretty awful they had to put a sign up to warn people because they're all like I WILL EAT YOUR SOUL AND REND YOUR FLESH MAYBE NOT IN THAT ORDER.

So glad I don't live there anymore.

You're Gonna Have to Try Harder.

For those of you with Steam/those of you with an interest in wicked sweet games: have you yet to experience the Humble Bundle?  The glorious bundle where you get mad games for wicked cheap.  Please investigate it.  They are doing something new, a weekly sale, and this week's item is Bastion.  I mentioned it a while ago, and it is a pretty sweet game, and also relatively easy.

Ugh, just watch the trailer:

The Humble Bundle (http://www.humblebundle.com/weekly) lets you get this game for ONE DOLLA.  If you pay the average price ($2.62 at the time of posting), you also get BONUS CONTENT.  It is totally worth it.  Mega cheaps.

As far as adventures go, I have been up to absolutely nothing.  I did nothing glorious over the last spring break I will ever have.  No sir, I got a cold and I worked 8 hour days the whole week.  Grandpa's also not doing so well either.  Repeated head trauma has rapidly increased the rate of his (impending) memory loss.  He's still got long term memory going on, but short term is severely limited.  He doesn't hold conversations anymore.  It's difficult; he is not the same person.  Things are difficult.

Some Nicolas Cage brought a little light back into my life, though.  Cage match.  Hoy's.  Things aren't so bad.  Not bad at all.  Impending debt, uncertain future, and here I am feeling better.

What's the deal with that?

Bonus music Tuesday:

(Pomplamoose is French for grapefruit, or so I have heard).

Spring in Winter

So despite snow storms and having to unearth my car at the crack of dawn this morning just to get to class, I feel like Spring is in the air. Renewal mixed with nostalgia, you know? (renewal in that it was kind of warm today, all things considered, and nostalgia because I found Sailor Moon on the internet a few days ago and have been revisiting some old books and I keep thinking Hey! I'm going to see Those People I Like soon!)

Though I don't think a lot of our spring breaks match up and not everyone is coming home for break.

STILL! Spring break means we're closer than ever to summer break and then

AND THEN

I think we ought to have a gathering. With food and drink and maybe it can be outside and it will be lovely.

School's going alright--this semester is the first time I'm taking less than the maximum amount of credits and holy crap how have I been doing this all this time I don't even

But I think my lack of classes miiiight have had a negative impact on my motivation to like, do anything. Oops?

And sadly I think my plans to head off to ye olde Baltimore are going to have to be postponed, cuz I keep having mild panic attacks about debt and I don't think having to pay rent and whatnot is going to help that at all. AT ALL. And waking up in the middle of the night with the crushing weight of all the things I need to pay back doesn't strike me as horribly healthy.

But one day it'll be okay.

Sigh.

All things considered, not doing too bad. Pretty excited for April's Camp Nano (and if you've been too intimidated to do Nano in November cuz of the whole 50k words thing, try Camp Nano! They've adjusted it so you can set your own word count goal so long as it is at least 10k AND you can do scripts for like screen plays and stuff).

MOTIVATION.

(also, anyone got any good book recommendations? I AM LE BORED)

This song has totally been my jam this past week.

Notes from a new insomniac

Gah, it's a dismal day outside. Here's some rainy day tunes to go with my post.

I slept through my alarm this morning. This is odd for two reasons. 1. My alarm is set on my phone which sleeps with me in the bed all night next to my ear for the sole purpose of avoiding sleeping in, and 2. I've been having this terrible insomnia lately which means I'm usually up way before my alarm anyway.

So imagine my surprise when my second alarm goes off at 9:15am and I'm still in bed, feeling rested for the first time in...a week? Or has it been two weeks? Time has been weird so who knows. I think it's the rain. Rain always soothes me, and despite the fact that it was the most beautiful snow a few days ago (and spring the day before that), suddenly it was raining. People blame global warming, but I still think I'm a weather goddess. Before I realized that my mood was INCREDIBLY weather sensitive, I used to think that the weather was actually responding to my mood instead of influencing it. And now, even though I'm apparently an adult about 90 days from the adult world, I'm starting to go back to that line of thinking. Maybe the weather is so crazy erratic because my mood has been so crazy erratic. It was snowing these fat, happy contented flakes when I was feeling at peace, then the next day that gave way to sun and warm weather, just when I was feeling happy and optimistic. Now though, after another battle with insomnia, I'm beginning to feel doubtful, and a little bit afraid.

It's always the odds and ends of thought that keep me awake, things I can't change or don't understand or both. Death. My future. Things I've done wrong that haven't caught up to me yet. Things I've done wrong that I haven't even realized. Loneliness.

I've tried self-medicating a bit, but I don't like the way Z-quil makes me feel, and I'm totally unwilling to try anything harder. I've started doing yoga before bed and meditating, which helps some, but mostly I've been camping out on my couch. I do too much work and homework on my bed, which I know psychologically makes it harder for you to sleep in your own bed (because it becomes a place you associate with work and stress instead of rest), so I've started using a desk for the first time in years, pressed up against my bedroom window. But mostly I've been couching it up, watching movies on Netflix where everyone is more stressed than I am until the weight of everyone else's heavy burdens push me down to sleep. Some times this happens at 2:00am, sometimes it happens at 6:00am. After four or so hours of sleeping and dozing I wake up and start my day.

I've never considered myself an anxious person, but I know it's mostly anxiety that's keeping me up. Again, there's no way I'm taking meds for that (I don't even use shampoo anymore because I'm that wary of chemicals; thanks for the help in finding alternatives by the way Trish!). So I'm hoping talking about it with you guys, or at least sharing it with you, will help take some of the burden off.

Some of it is coming from too much work/homework and not enough time.

Some of it is coming from sadness over having to graduate and say good bye to my friends. And of course the uncertainty surrounding my future.

Some of it comes from (GOOD NEWS ALERT) the fact that I got the Alaska job as a horseback guide! Which I'm am thrilled about but also sooooooo incredibly nervous about. Is it childish of me to run off to Alaska and ride ponies for five months? How will this help me get a future career? What if I'm putting off finding a real job, and thus I never get one? How will this help me pay off my loans? Should I just stay in Chicago and work in the bookstore? What if what if what if?

What if what if what if.

Less Content, More Music

Not a whole lot to say at the moment, to be honest. Classes are going alright, the end is in sight (I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THAT CEREMONY), and if they push back the BioShock: Infinite release date one more time I'm going to scream.

BUT ANYWAY.

I need music. But a certain kind! But not the kind I can just tap into a search engine and hope for the best for, because it's an idea rather than a genre, so I am asking you lovely folks for ideas.

What kind of music belongs in a playlist called "Urban Decay?"

GO.

DO ME PROUD.

Though I will still love you if you can't think of anything.

...Probably.

Note: music does not need to be The Birthday Massacre or even The Birthday Massacre-esque. Which is why trying to use Pandora can prove difficult, since they get a little *too* into the genre and I'm aiming for variety. Also interested in seein' what y'all can come up with :)

We're Chained

I want to be positive.
I want to be upbeat.
But really, I'm just hoping everything will finally fall into place.

But it's not.
Not yet, at least.

If anything, everything is falling apart.

I feel like I am less certain of what I want to do with my life than ever before.

With decision time looming closer, I am just backing myself further and further into a corner.

I don't want to think about the future.

I just want to sit down and play video games.

I'm feeling pretty trapped right now.

What kind of job experience do I have?  It's pretty useless, whatever it is.

What do I even want to do with it anyway?
Where do I even want to go?
Who do I want by my side?
What am I willing to sacrifice? And to what end?

But somehow, I really am not that worried about it.
I mean, what good will worrying do?

Everything seems to work out for everyone, in some way, shape, or form.
Life's been good to us so far...

I'm sure we'll all be fine, with whatever it is that we're going to do.

You're in the Wrong Part of Town, Buddy

I can taste the sweet freedom of winter break.  I have completed the treacherous Nine Project Week.  I have lost several days of sleep, survived many hours of car-sick feelings, and thwarted some minor hallucinations.

I return to this mortal realm only to see all of you struggling, and I would like to give you words of comfort.  It is hard!  You will be tired!  But you CAN do it, because you are all fucking fantastic.
You all make me as happy as this cleavage bird:

Please let me know if you guys need any help!  I have a lot of free time until the end of the semester.  I can research for you.  I can distract.  I can recommend games or movies or TV shows.  I can chat.  Let me help all of you!

When I was working on my projects, I found that ingesting too much caffeine and listening to instrumentals really helped me focus and write.  Also, video game music.   Lone Star is a song from a quirky indie game I picked up in a Humble Bundle.  You can tell it was designed for a touch-screen tablet or phone, but is workable on a computer as well.  It's kind of like a puzzle/action/mystery game, where the main character is on a quest to conquer some unconquerable power at great cost.

It is full of interesting, original music and incredibly silly and witty one-liners.  Colorful, yet dark pixel scenery sets a good tone for the gameplay.  The world is a little small, but there is a lot of originality behind the way it is laid out and the events that occur in it.  It's even a thought-provoking game, in a "what the heck is going on and whyyyy" kind of way.  Most indie games these days are platformers, puzzle, or physics games, so this was a refreshing game to play, and something I'd recommend to others.

Ugh.  Rainbows.  Scythians loath rainbows.

On the Merits of Procrastination

Sometimes you just can't keep going.

Your brain is fried, your mind is tired, and no matter how long you stare at the blank Word document nothing comes to mind. You can't do it. You're tapped out.

You can do one of two things in a situation like this. The first is to sit there with grim determination, gritting your teeth and trying to force your brain to do what you need it to do. This method has iffy results in my experience; more often than not I wind up sitting there for hours until my inner thoughts become silent screams of frustration. I get tense, I get sick, I go a little nuts thinking about all the work I have to do and how my life's purpose has been reduced to sitting in front of a computer trying to write something that just doesn't want to be written.

I imagine none of this is particularly good for your health.

The second option is procrastination.

Play a game. I find puzzle games in particular to be the most useful. There's this one I play on addictinggames called 3-D puzzle something or other and it calms me down every time. Organizes my thoughts. It's pretty great.

Talk to someone. Vid chat, over aim, texting. I guess you can make a phone call if you absolutely have to. If you're lucky that person will be willing to spend four to five hours on complete nonsense with you, but it will be quality nonsense and you'll wake up in the morning and crank out another 3,000 words for that novel project you've been working on all semester (Thanks, Rachel!)

And when you need just a little break, write a blog post. Write a blog post on procrastination. Get all meta on that shit.

And then get back to work.

Countdown

17: days until I come home
10: places I STILL haven't been and want to go
5: assignments for creative writing portfolio
2: essays to research and write
1: theatre journal to finish up

But we all know I Can't Math so it is possible these calculations are inaccurate and the countdown may be a failure - blinking lights, drumroll, anxiety, and Large Multimillion Dollar Light Up Countdown Board all a waste. I suppose we'll see.

I don't feel like I've done a whole lot here, but I've grown to love London anyway, and in quiet moments between paragraphs about the First World War and Trade Unions I stare out my flat window and find myself desperately wishing that I could stay. But then I think of pumpkin pie and my family and you lovely people and I can't wait to get on the plane. I miss you all more than I can say, darlings.

ALSO WHAT ARE MY EMOTIONS DOING. ESSAYS AND MINI-MENTAL BREAKDOWNS OVER THE FUUUUTURE AND UGH ESSAYS AND FUCKING ESSAYS AND FUCK EVERYTHING I am going ice skating.

I almost posted this on the Other Blog, because OH MAN SARAH you are such an eloquent writer it is most definitely Not Fair. And how could I mar that gorgeous prose and those stories that give me hope and what can I say in response I've been trying to think of how to phrase the sensation in my ribs when I read it, but can't quite get it down and now here I am, puking up a hasty update but I figured I should let you all know I'm alive and can we all do a little honeymoon when we're all in the same state again, just for a night because hey! We're Just Married!

But, then, I've been listening to this song for days and days because why  not and no gif really encapsulated the weird headspace I'm CLEARLY occupying here (Overuse of Capitalization and Run On Sentences must lead to some horrible diagnosis oh god forgive me guys) SO YOU GET A SONG AND A HORRIBLE POST.  NOW I HAVE TO GO I AM HONESTLY GOING TO GO ICE SKATING ILU ALL.

Friday, November 23, 2012

I feel like we're all playing a game of hide and seek except we forgot to pick a seeker.

Hi! Remember me! Hi! I am such a terrible person! I always read and never post because, don'tchaknow, I'm so so so busy.

So here I am, a few hours before second thanksgiving when I will be able to spontaneously embrace all of you after....months? years? and despite that it always feels like I saw all of you yesterday. Who does that? Who has that?

So I have to be honest, I haven't kept up with the last...two months of post? So I went back and read them and was just crying, because it made me miss all of you. I just, I think, get so wrapped up in my life, and being the Editor-in-Chief of a newspaper and a responsible person who suddenly writes a senior thesis and reaaaaalllyyyy lonnnngggggg papersssss about poetry, and has every hour of her day scheduled down to the minute because otherwise I will drown instead of doing the slowly sinking thing I'm managing now that I just FORGET that there is something else out there.

Looming.

What I meant by my title is this (answered in a circular way that will probably find its way back to some holistic theme):

My super smart brother, who spent literally his WHOLE life saying he was going to be a theoretical physicist, is now applying to get his masters in education and will probably teach high school physics in Boston. How perfect is that for him? it is!

His friend Andrew, who wanted to go to seminary and be a pastor until suddenly he didn't is getting married even though he cleans malls right now or something like that. Doesn't have a clue what's next.

My friend from school was dreading spending thanksgiving with her family because her cousin is in nursing school and she's only an English major and well, we all know who's going to have a nice job don't we heh? *insert snide comments, pointed questions and knowing looks*

My mom said to me yesterday, out of the blue, "You know, I was thinking the other day, when you girls move back in after school, that small bathroom will be yours and you can keep all your stuff in there. Isn't that perfect?" And I was literally stunned because me moving back in with my parents after school suddenly just became a thing that was happening. (and because that was a perfect idea even though there isn't much counter space in there...)

The best laid plans...My brother stopped coming back home after his freshman year. He just always seemed to have ideas. I feel like I have tons of ideas but no will to act on them. All this real world stuff just makes me so lethargic. Grad school is a huge no. I'm done with school for a while, and I'm broke to boot. Plus, I literally just skipped two days of school to come back early and was like, FORGET SCHOOL MAAAAN. so clearly further higher education is not for me right now. Do I get an apartment in Chicago and work in the book store (which is a very very very real thing). What if that becomes a thing? What if I really like it? What if I just pick up and move to Taiwan where I learn Chinese (mandarin) and teach English? That's also a really really real thing. But what if these really hard months between seeing you guys become really hard years? I'd be lying if I said I didn't still hold the bookstore we all need to open as the ultimate goal in my life, but I feel like that's a lot of pressure to put on people.

I guess the thing is, no one really knows what the next step is, because no one has planned it for us. That is so so terrifying isn't it? Its all on us, you, me now and I'm floundering. But I'm also pretty stoked for it, ya know? And, well, we have each other and I don't think I need much else right now. Except maybe someone to write these papers for me.

So, if that doesn't make up for months of not posting, I don't know what will (besides more consistent posting of course).

A quick catch up for my life atm: My favorite bar in town burned down and I am DEVASTATED. I'm writing/illustrating/designing a children's book for my book design class and it's going to be printed like a real book. In hard cover! I also have finally hit my academic stride and am earning all A's this semester...though I have some pretty big research papers coming up. I'm still figuring out what my next step is, and I'm so so scared. I have bubblegum pink pants that I'm wearing tonight and I love them, even though I never thought I would ever wear pink. Like, ever. I'm also working a lot at the bookstore this winter break, so please come visit me and prove to my co-workers that I have friends. You can all buy some wine and books while you're there.

I have also been listening to Blind Pilot a lot, even though it makes me sad sometimes. I like to think this is one of those songs they play in the last few minutes of a movie where the heroine has gone through some life changing moments, and even though the future is so uncertain, she's a better person for the experience and moving forward. You know, she just walked out of some building and is looking into the distance (the universal movie sign for thinking ahead to the future) with a small, hopeful, slightly embittered smile on her face--I am not projecting at all.

Music, Mostly

My life atm: projects, nano, and hopefully seeing most of your lovely faces in the very, very near future.

I like this song more and more each time I hear it:

On What You Really Want

Man I am so glad for this semester to be over.  Or at least for November to be over.  I am not excited at all for my last semester at college because that means I have to face the real world?!  What???  My friend who graduated last year with only one major (Entrepreneurship) is currently making a living by being a custodial engineer and selling bodily fluids (plasma).  I am not excited for finding a job.

I mean what do I even want to do?

What do you even want to do?

In other news, one of my projects entails launching a professional KickStarter page.  That means making a demo video of the product we're raising money for.  And since I can't understand all of these Royalty Free/Creative Commons rules, I figured I'd write my own song.   We'll see how that one goes, but I am a little excited.  I just can't seem to get the right sounds on my came-with-the-computer music creating program though... prepare for disaster!

Also, it looks like Walk Off the Earth released the first single from their EP:

High Quality this shit!
